Day 1Lay it the day it arrives

- 1
Before deliveryGet the ground ready
- Clear the area of old lawn, weeds, rocks and rubbish.
- Level the soil, filling low spots, and rake it smooth.
- Lightly wet the soil the day before if it's very dry.
- Choose where the pallets can be dropped, close to where you'll lay.
- 2
Delivery dayLay the turf the same day
- Turf is harvested the day before delivery. Lay it as soon as it arrives, ideally within hours.
- Start along a straight edge, such as a path, and stagger the joins like brickwork.
- Push the edges tightly together without stretching the turf or leaving gaps.
- Cut around corners and garden beds with a sharp knife.
- Roll or press it down firmly so the roots touch the soil.
- 3
Straight after layingGive it a deep first water
- Water thoroughly straight away. The soil under the turf should be wet through.
- Lift a corner to check. It should feel damp, not dry or swampy.
- 4
Weeks 1–2Keep it moist
- Water little and often so the turf and the soil beneath never dry out. In hot weather that can mean twice a day.
- Keep off it as much as possible while the roots are forming.
- Watch the edges and joins. They dry out first.
- 5
Weeks 2–4Check roots, then first mow
- Gently tug a corner. If it resists, the roots have taken hold.
- Do the first mow on a high setting and never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
- Slowly water deeper and less often to encourage deep roots.
- 6
Week 4 onwardsSettle into a routine
- Lower the mower height gradually to the range for your variety.
- Fertilise with a quality lawn fertiliser, about 4–6 weeks after laying.
- Water deeply once or twice a week in summer rather than a little every day.
Heads up: every yard and season is a bit different. Hot, windy weather means more water, and cool weather means less. If something looks off, send us a photo and we'll help.
Care questions
My turf is turning yellow or brown. What now?
Most often it's too little water in the first weeks, especially at the edges. Water deeply and check the joins. If it's wet and still yellow, send us a photo.
Why are there gaps between the rolls?
Turf can shrink slightly as it dries. Keep the joins moist, and top-dress any gaps with a little soil.
When can the kids and pets use it?
Keep traffic light until the turf has rooted, usually 3–4 weeks. Try the tug test on a corner first.
How often should I mow?
It depends on the variety and the season. Kikuyu grows fast and needs the most mowing. Sir Walter is slow growing and needs the least.
